Jean Valjean, a man who has just been released from prison after 19 years, arrives in Digne where he is taken in for the night by Bishop Myriel. During the night, he steals the bishop’s silverware and runs off. The police arrest him and bring him back to the bishop who states that the silverware was a gift. Touched by the bishop’s generosity, Jean Valjean vows to change his life for the better. He is able to accomplish his goal thanks to his meeting with Cosette.
